UNISON has launched the Mary Seacole (1805-1881) campaign 'Turn her into stone'

Following the motion passed at National Women's Conference earlier this year, UNISON is now campaigning to raise public funds in order to erect a statue of this inspiring black female nurse, in the grounds of St. Thomas' Hospital, London.
It is hoped that the statue will become a permanent reminder of her significant achievements during the Crimean War and will address the view that the only nursing hero of the Crimean War was Florence Nightingale. UNISON is therefore encouraging branches to run fund-raising activities, as well as seeking donations from partner groups and organisations and the public, to ensure that the total needed for the project is reached.
